Obituary

Ambrose "Sam" W. Schmitz, 93, of Mount Calvary, passed away with his loving family at his side on Monday, December 28, 2015, at the Villa Loretto Nursing Home in Mount Calvary. Sam was born May 17, 1922, in the Town of Marshfield near Mount Calvary to Mathias & Ottilia (Schneider) Schmitz. He attended Holy Cross Catholic Grade School. He served in the Navy Sea Bees from March 3, 1945 until May 20, 1946. On June 14, 1947, he married Mary Helen Schrage at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Mount Calvary. Sam farmed in the Town of Marshfield. He owned and operated a school bus service for the Fond du Lac School District from 1954 until the mid 1960's. He also was a machinist at G & L in Fond du Lac for 20 years. He was a member of St. Isidore Parish-Holy Cross Church in Mount Calvary and the Abler-Engel Post 454 American Legion of Mount Calvary. In 2010, he traveled to Washington DC on a Honor Flight accompanied by his daughter. He was a retired member of the Mount Calvary Volunteer Fire Department. Survivors include his wife, Helen; his children, Tom (Jan) Schmitz of Calvary Station, Cathy Schmitz Couillard and her husband Troy Couillard of Madison and Nick (Bonnie) Schmitz of Sheboygan; eight grandchildren, Bryan (Debbie), Greg (Jennifer), Joy (Luke), Kim (Chad), Chelsea (Adam) Aviar (Stephanie), Adam (Julia) and Brad (Nicole); his sister, Nettie Pauly of Mount Calvary; his brothers, Anthony (Mae) Schmitz and Alvin (Donna) Schmitz both of Fond du Lac; sisters-in-law, Zona Schmitz of Columbus and Judy (Paul) Runkel of Milwaukee; and two brothers-in-law, Robert (Agnes) Schrage of Mount Calvary and Vern Holzman of Plymouth. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Preceding him in death were his parents, Mathias & Ottilia Schmitz; a son & daughter-in-law, John J. (Janice) Schmitz; a grandson, Jeffrey Schmitz; three sisters, Marcella Wagner, Elizabeth "Elsie" Sippel and Virginia Rahmer; two infant brothers, Adrian & Albin; five additional brothers, Alex, Alfred, Arnold, Alphonse and Andrew Schmitz. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 6:00pm on Friday, January 1, 2016, at St. Isidore Parish-Holy Cross Church, 308 S. County Road W Mount Calvary, WI 53057. Rev. Gary Wegner, OFM Cap will officiate. Burial will take place in the spring in the Holy Cross Cemetery. Military Rites conducted by the Abler-Engel Post 454 American Legion and State Military Honors will be conducted at the church following the Mass. Family and friends may greet the family at the church on Friday, January 1st from 3:00pm until 5:30pm.
