Donald Frederick Arne, age 84, of Oshkosh, passed away on Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at Mercy Medical Center in Oshkosh. Donald was born on October 30, 1931 in Oshkosh, WI to the late Frederick J. and Clara Sonkowsky Arne. He graduated with the Class of 1949 from Oshkosh High School. He married Gail Elizabeth Rehbein on July 9, 1955 at Zion Lutheran Church in Oshkosh, WI. Musically inclined, Don played trumpet in the High School band. As casualties of WWII returned home for burial, Arne was recruited to play TAPS at those funeral services. Don proudly served in the United States Navy from 1951 to 1955, and was attached to the Marines as a Corpsman. After 3 months of Ward Duty, tending to the wounded Marines returning from Korea, Don was prompted to volunteer for Fleet Marine Duty. He then received combat training at Camp Pendleton, California, and was sent to Korea with replacements of the 1st Marine Division. He was assigned to "H" Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines. During his enlistment he received many ribbons and awards, as well as The Purple Heart. Upon his discharge from the United States Navy, he was employed as an officer with the Oshkosh Police Department for 5 years; and then North Central Airlines, as a Station Agent for 8 years. In 1965 Don was employed with the Shaw-Barton Company, a calendar and specialty advertising company, as a Sales Representative and District Manager. The company changed its name several times, but Don maintained his active selling expertise until recently under HALO Branded Solutions. Don was a lifetime member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oshkosh, serving on many church committees. He was a member of the Winnebago Detachment #357 Marine Corps League, Past Commander and Chaplin for 22 years of the Winnebago Land Chapter 162 of the Military Order of the Purple Heart (M.O.P.H.), Past Commander of the Oshkosh American Legion Post 70, American Legion the 40 & 8, and Ray H. Fuller DAV Chapter 17. He was also involved in the Oshkosh Patriotic Council and the Oshkosh Chamber of Commerce, serving as an Ambassador for many years. He was an originating member of the MMC, Inc. ("Mickey Mouse Club") which was started by a group of local Oshkosh businessmen who got together on Friday mornings for coffee. This group began the celebration of "Sawdust Daze" (currently known as Sawdust Days). Don is credited with the naming of the event. Active in the community, Don was Past President of the Oshkosh Lakeshore Lions Club, Vice-President of the Oshkosh Jaycees, and a member of the Winnebago County Board of Supervisors for 15 years, serving as Chairman of several committees. He was particularly proud of his Winnebago County Board involvement with constructing the original Lake Butte des Morts (Hwy 441) bridge, a new Wittman Field Airport terminal in Oshkosh, and bringing the EAA to our Oshkosh community. Don has continued to share his musical talent by assisting in providing military honors for veterans and participated in many processions and parades. His rendering of The Final Call - TAPS - has moved many. Don was an avid duck hunter, also enjoyed fishing and deer hunting. He was a member of the N.R.A., Ducks Unlimited and Walleyes for Tomorrow. Don will always be remembered for his quick sense of humor, his ready smile, and his unforgettable plan to "make someone smile every day". He will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 61 years, Gail; his children , Steven (Jayne) Arne of Oshkosh, Kevin (Marie Carneado) Arne of Town of Lamartine, Dawn (Andrew) Martin of Oshkosh; his sister-in-law Phyllis Becker of Miami, FL; his grandchildren, Heidi (Ken) Liebhaber, Holly (Jeremy Fleming) Hoeft, Mark (Heather) Arne, Miles Arne, Claranna (Logan Richter) Arne and Drake Arne; great grandchildren, Andrew, Dakota and Mason Liebhaber, Lillyanna Leal, Vianna Fleming, Amaris Jayne Arne, also by other relatives and friends. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Lynn Kallas in 2003. VISITATION will be on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Grace Ev. Lutheran Church, 913 Nebraska St, Oshkosh, WI 54902. FUNERAL SERVICES will be on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. at the church, Pastor Chadwick Graham officiating. BURIAL will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, September 29, 2016 at Lakeview Memorial Park with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, a memorial in his name will be established.
