Donald “Don” Scherer, age 87, of Sherwood, passed away peacefully at home from heart complications on Wednesday, July 28, 2021.
Don was born on March 16, 1934 in Appleton, son of the late Peter and Caroline (Van Wychen) Scherer. He was a graduate of Hilbert High School, class of 1953. On April 12, 1955, he married Adeline Schultz, daughter of Emil and Helen Schultz, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sherwood. Don was raised on the family farm, and truly never left, moving his young family back when his father needed help. He was also employed at Foremost Foods, working there for 40 years. Even after retiring Don never failed to keep himself busy, working as a volunteer at St. Joe's Food Pantry in Menasha for 20 years, and also driving cars at Central Garage in Potter. Don had a passion for travel, especially when he could drive. Those trips generated stories which he loved sharing. Family members are convinced he drove to add to his collection of stories. Meanwhile, the farm reached Century Farm status in 2004.
He had a passion for puzzles of all types; sudoku, word search, parquet, and especially jigsaw puzzles which numbered in the hundreds. He was fond of weekly card games with friends, and mastered the fine art of cracking hickory nuts. He also improved Adeline's recipe for fruit cake. Some believe it was the brandy. Don loved sharing hickory nuts, fruit cake, and stories with the family he loved and his large network of friends.
He is survived by his wife Adeline, and six of their eight children: Dan (Lynn), Dennis (Lisa), Dawn (Mike) Haley, Diane (Steve) Turk, Dave (Maria), daughter-in-law Carla, and Daryl (special friend, Connie), grandchildren: Andrew, Matt (special friend, Chandler), Nick (Sandy), Crystal, Jon (Whitney), Jacob (Jessica) Turk, Shane (Sara) Turk, Stephen (Kate) Turk, Heather Hopfensperger, Zach Haen, Alec, Bryant (Danielle), Erin, Mara, Seth (special friend, Hope), Hailey, Noah, and Hunter; great-grandchildren: Jordyn, Jace, Teagan, Parker, Hudson, Rosalyn, and Emma; and further survived by Adeline's siblings: Eleanor Redman, Lee Schultz, Mike Schultz, and Donna Otto.
Don is preceded in death by his parents Peter and Caroline, Adeline's parents Emil and Helen, two sons, Donny and Doug; his sister Delores Thiel and her husband Harold, and Adeline's siblings: Unice Nickel, Lila Pohlman, Eva Pohlman, Marvin Schultz, and Esther Kempen.
