Obituary

Donald E. Spletter, age 91, of Chilton, died on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, at A Bridge Care Concepts in Chilton. Don was born February 10, 1930, to Paul and Esther (Hintz) Spletter in New Holstein. He had 10 brothers and sisters. On December 17, 1948, he married Madeline Best in Elkhart Lake. They had five children; Marsha (Jim) Lisowe, Donna (Larry) Bernard, Paula (David) Feldner, Kathy (Larry) Meyer, and Tom (Lori) Spletter. Madeline preceded him in death on June 19, 1991. On April 27, 2008 he married Carol Widi of Green Bay; Carol preceded him in death on July 26, 2014. While attending NHHS, he participated in every sport. He received many awards; one of them being American Legion Sportsman of the Year award which he was proud that his mother got to pin it on him. He held the record for pole Vault at NHHS for a long time. He also received All Tournament Award for best basketball player in Brillion. After high school, he participated in NH athletics and was a member of the Mountain Boys. He refereed for 13 years in EWC. Don was employed at MB Company in New Holstein and later worked for Calumet County Highway Dept. He was a member of the New Holstein Fire Department for 44 years; 13 years as First Assistant and 14 years as Fire Chief. Don was also a member and President of Calumet County Fire Chiefs, and belonged to fire investigators with NHFD, and Calumet County. He was named Wisconsin Firefighter of the Year. Don visited the Chicago Fire Department at O'Hare Airport and rode on the fire boat. Don was a member of St. John United Church of Christ in New Holstein as well as member of the New Holstein Lions Club where he received his 50 year award for perfect attendance. Don enjoyed, golf, bowling, woodworking, going up North fishing, playing cards, and attending many sporting events for grandkids, and great grandkids. Survivors include his children; 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; his brother, Lee (Cheri) Spletter; his sisters, Shirley Blade and Sandra (Ed) Cunningham; and his sister in law, Mary Jo Spletter. Preceding him in death were his parents, Paul and Esther Spletter; his father-in-law & mother-in -law, Carl and Renate Best; wives, Madeline and Carol; daughter, Donna (Larry) Bernard; grandson, Paul Meyer; great-grandsons, Brandon Paulson and Kade Meyer; sisters, Marion (Robert) Bowe, Doris (Bob) Powell, Margie (Jim) Rozman, Betty Jane Spletter, Barbara (Ron) Forstner; brothers, Paul and Elroy (Esther) Spletter; and a brother-in-law, Darle Blade. Funeral Services will be held at 4:00 PM on Sunday, January 16, 2022, at the Sippel Funeral Home, 2618 Altona Avenue, New Holstein, WI 53061. Rev. Michael Safford-Kennedy will officiate. Don will be laid to rest next to his first wife, Madeline, in the Countryview Cemetery in the Town of New Holstein. Visitation: Family and friends may visit with Don's family at the Sippel Funeral Home on Sunday, January 16th from 12:00 PM until 3:45 PM.
