Ellsworth "Moose" Thome, age 85, of Malone "Johnsburg", passed away at his home on the hill "Moose Mountain" on Wednesday, May 19, 2021. He was born in the family farmhouse on February 1, 1936, to Valentine & Marcella (Koenigs) Thome. The next day a big snowstorm was expected, so they took their son to church for baptism. His mother said, he doesn't even have a name yet. His godmother, Lucinda, said, "don't worry, he'll have one when he gets home"!. He attended and graduated grade school at St. John's Catholic School in Johnsburg and graduated from Goodrich High School in 1954. Moose served in the Army in Korea from February 20, 1956 until December 3, 1957; and remained in the Reserves until February 19, 1962. Moose was a proud U.S. Army Veteran; serving in Inchon Korea. While there, he was the crane operator that set the statue of General MacArthur in Freedom Park. Moose and Joanne visited the statue in Korea 50 years later; it was the highlight of their many world wide travels. On a cold January day (January 17, 1959), he married Joanne Watry at St. Ann Catholic Church in St. Anna. Together they brought four boys into the world. Moose worked at the former Tecumseh Engine Products in New Holstein for 46 years. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Johnsburg, the German Club, and the Improved Order of Redmen in Johnsburg. He was a retired member of the Town of Calumet Volunteer Fire Department. Moose is survived by his wife, Joanne; his four sons, Fred (Gail) Thome of Malone "Johnsburg", Bill (Karen) Thome of Waupun, Doug (Karen) Thome of Mount Calvary, and Chuck Thome of Anchorage, Alaska; seven grandchildren, Peggy (Jestin) Danes, Pam (Ryan) Gudex, Peter Thome, Kristopher (Kristi) Thome, Nick Thome, Cody (Ashley) Thome, and Cory Thome; 12 great-grandchildren, Corbin, Della, Archie, and Wrennie Danes, Leo & Hal Gudex, McKenna & Emerson Thome, Ethyn & Breckyn Thome, and Bryson & Beckett Thome; his brothers & sisters, Roger Thome, Elmer (Lorraine) Thome, Louanne Simon, Mary (Andy) Gulig, Joan (Ben) Brenner, Marlys (Lorenzo) Fazio, Val (Sharon) Thome; his in-laws, Millie Vogel, Jerome (Rose) Watry, Bernie Halbach, Pat (Paul) Rieder, and Lorraine (Peter) Winkel. Moose is further survived by many nieces; nephews; other relatives; many friends; and his faithful four legged companion, Sam. Preceding him in death were his parents, Valentine & Marcella Thome; his father-in-law & mother-in-law, Isadore & Magdaline (Karls) Watry; his brother, Lyle Thome, his first wife, Evie, and his second wife, Barb; his in-laws, Harvey Simon, Lucille (Edward) Halbach, Leona (Bob) Ortlieb, Angie (Hank) Schuh, Ray Vogel, Jackie Watry, Dolores (Jim) Halbach, and Edmund Halbach. A Liturgy Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, May 24, 2021, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Johnsburg (N9288 County Road W, Malone, WI 53049). Rev. Gary Wegner, OFM Cap will officiate. Moose will be laid to rest in the St. John Catholic Cemetery. Military Rites will be conducted following the Mass. Visitation: Family and friends may visit with Moose's family at the Sippel Funeral Home in New Holstein, 2618 Altona Ave, New Holstein, WI 53061 on Sunday, May 23rd from 2:00 PM until 6:00 PM and visitation will also be at the funeral home Monday morning from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM.
