Obituary

Estelle M. Wagner, age 94, of rural St. Cloud "St. Joe" died Monday, September 10, 2012, at the Villa Loretto in Mt. Calvary. The former Estelle Fuhrmann was born September 8, 1918, on the family homestead near Wolf Lake, to the late Christ & Pauline (Petrie) Fuhrmann. Estelle graduated from Goodrich High School and Green Lake County Normal. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Marian College and received her Reading Certification from Oshkosh State University Graduate School. On May 30, 1942, she married Ray F. Wagner at St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Joe. Ray preceded her in death on November 19, 1990. Estelle taught in rural schools throughout Fond du Lac County for six years then took a 10 year departure from teaching to raise her two children. In 1954, she returned to teaching where she taught for 10 years at several different catholic schools; Holy Cross in Mt. Calvary, St. Joseph's in Fond du Lac, and St. Mary's in Fond du Lac. Estelle began teaching in the New Holstein Public Schools in 1964 and continued there until her retirement in 1984 where the last 17 years she taught reading to Junior High students. She was also involved with the summer school programs with the reading clinics. Upon retirement, she volunteered as a tutor at St. Lawrence Seminary in Mt. Calvary for 10 years. She also continued volunteering in the New Holstein Public Schools in their libraries and first and second grades. In 1977, Estelle was presented the District Teacher of the Year Award from the State Superintendent of Schools at that time, Barbara Thompson. Estelle was a member of St. Isidore Parish Holy Cross Church in Mt. Calvary and the Holy Cross Altar Society, the Fond du Lac County Retired Educators, Calumet County Retired Educators, a committee member of the Fond du Lac County Red Cross, and a former member of the Mid Wisconsin Library Board. She was a Holyland Bloodmobile Committee Member and was the publicity chairperson since its first visit in 1951. Estelle also volunteered in the campaign office of the Sixth Congressional District of Thomas Petri. She was a very avid bike rider an truly enjoyed her daily trips around Wolf Lake. Survivors include her two children, Mary (Karl) Schmidt of Fond du Lac and Chris (Kathy) Wagner of Glencoe, IL; five grandchildren, Andi (Reggie) Rainey, Jason Schmidt, Kristin (Eric) Virshbo, Erica (Rob) Olden, and Adam Wagner; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Valita Feldner of St. Cloud and Jeanette Ruh of Lake Oswego, Oregon. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Ray Wagner; a brother and his wife, Elmer (Mary Catherine) Fuhrmann; and two brothers-in-law, Oscar Feldner and Victor Ruh. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, September 14, 2012 at St. Isidore Parish Holy Cross Church, 308 County Road W in Mt. Calvary. Rev. Gary Wegner OFM Cap. will officiate. Burial will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Mt. Calvary. Family and friends may call at the Sippel Funeral Home 1311 Thorp Street in St. Cloud on Thursday, September 13, 2012 from 4-7 PM and again at the funeral home Friday morning from 8:30-10:00 AM when brief family rites will be held. A prayer service will be held at the funeral home Thursday evening at 7:00 PM. Memorials may be directed to the Villa Loretto Nursing Home or to St. Isidore Parish.
