Jane (Genevieve) Hammer, 90, formerly of Marytown, passed away at her home in Green Bay, Wisconsin, on Friday morning, October 19, 2012. Jane was born in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin on July 5, 1922, to the late Mattie (Brielmaier) and William Steffes. She grew up in St. Joe, Wisconsin, where she attended parochial school. Jane graduated from Goodrich High School in Fond du Lac and then earned a teaching certification from Oshkosh Teacher's College. For two years, Jane taught in a one-room schoolhouse at Marytown, Wisconsin. In 1945 Jane left her teaching career and married Joseph L. Hammer of Marytown, and they raised a family of 6 children. They began married life as farmers, but in 1948 they became owners of Heus Manufacturing Co., Marytown. Jane participated in the business by serving as its bookkeeper. For well over 50 years, Jane has been active in numerous civic, religious and cultural activities. She was a long-time member of the Altar and Rosary Society of St. Mary's Parish in Marytown, and was a founding member of the Consolidated Parochial Elementary Schools serving Marytown, Johnsburg, St. Cloud and Mount Calvary, Wisconsin. Jane also helped found the Marytown Homemakers Club and served in leadership positions through the years. She also served as an adult leader for the Marytown 4-H Club. Jane extended her Homemakers and 4-H roles to leadership activities with the Fond du Lac County Extension of the University of Wisconsin. After moving to the Green Bay area in late retirement, Jane became active with the Brown County Homemakers as well as the Ashwaubenon Historical Society. An avid quilter, Jane participated for many years in the St. Mary's Church Quilting Group. She was an excellent seamstress, adept at upholstering furniture, and skilled at refinishing woodwork. Each summer she tended a vegetable garden, canning or freezing its produce. She was a master at cooking healthy meals, and her desserts for diabetics were tasty to everyone. Jane is survived by her children Eileen (Kenneth) Housfeld, Pleasant Hill, California; Charles Hammer and Mary Griffin, Madison, Wisconsin; Donald (Synthia) Hammer, Colorado Springs, Colorado; Annette (Michael) Aubinger, Green Bay, Wisconsin; Rosemary (Guy) Tutland, Medford, Oregon; William Hammer, Atlanta Georgia, and the family's Chilean foreign exchange student Adriana Murray from Santiago, Chile. In addition she is survived by five grandchildren, Danae Torres, Colorado Springs, Colorado; Renette Hammer, Colorado, Springs, Colorado; Niko and Genevieve Tutland, Medford, Oregon; Steven Housfeld, Pleasant Hill, California; and step-granddaughter Laura Housfeld, San Francisco, California. Survivors also include two brothers, Al (Joan) Steffes, West Bend, Wisconsin; and Bob Steffes, Brookfield, Wisconsin; two sisters, Irene Gilgenbach, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin; and Joan Birkholz, Wauwatosa, Wisconsin; two sisters-in-law: Marge Steffes, Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Victoria Steffes, Glendale, Wisconsin. Additional survivors include nieces and nephews, as well as special friends from St. Mary's Church and the Marytown community where Jane spent all but the past few years of her life. Preceding Jane in death is her husband of 50-plus years, Joseph Hammer; two brothers, Sylvester Steffes and Herbert Steffes, and one sister Lucille Steffes; one sister-in-law, Beverly Steffes and two brothers-in-law Edmund Gilgenbach and Gerald Birkholz. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, October 23, 2012 at St. Mary's Catholic Church N10232 County Road G New Holstein "Marytown". Rev. Joseph Coerber will officiate. Visitation will be at the Sippel Funeral Home, 2618 Altona Ave. in New Holstein, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, October 22. On Tuesday October 23 visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Marytown. A memorial fund is being established in Jane's name.
