Germaine O. Steiner of New Holstein passed away peacefully on August 12, 2018. The former Germaine Mauer was born Dec. 13, 1918 in New Holstein to the late Henry and Kathryn (Mahlberg) Mauer.
She married Oscar Steiner on Feb. 23, 1946 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in New Holstein, he preceded her in death on Oct. 9, 1977.
Germaine graduated from New Holstein High School in 1937. After high school Germaine had several jobs in Milwaukee including during WW II joining the "Rosie the Riveter" women's movement in support of the US troops abroad.
Germaine was an independent woman, well respected and long-time resident of New Holstein. She was an avid reader of biographies and history. She had an uncommon gift of genuinely listening to others. She lived by the rules of society, followed the teachings of her religion and held a strong faith in God. She was always interested in current events, local and world.
Germaine loved the home she lived in for 59 years. In her well cared home she had a passion for baking, sewing, loved to garden and landscape. She played bridge, entertained family and watched many Packer games. She was blessed with wonderful caring neighbors. Upon leaving Germaine's home after a visit one would take with them a home-made treat. Her home was her castle.
She was a member of Holy Rosary Parish, its Christian Women Society and the New Holstein Historical Society. In her earlier years she was a Girl Scout leader, took advantage of many adult evening classes in tailoring, knitting, hat decorating, ceramics which all lead to enjoyable hobbies. She volunteered in her church and community for many years.
Germaine's greatest enjoyment in life was spending time with her siblings and their families. She was especially proud of her three daughters, their children and her great-grandchildren. She will be missed.
Survivors include her three daughters, Kathy (Gale) Bauer of Mauston, Krys (Steve Sierlecki) Steiner of Pewaukee, Mary Kay (John) Lyons of Madison. Her grandchildren, Ryan (Lacy) Bauer of Madison, Ben (Christina) Wilkin of San Diego, CA, Eric Bauer of Phoenix, AZ., Ashley Thompson of Madison. Her great-grandchildren, Henry, Amelia, Louie Bauer of Madison, Isaic Wilkin of San Diego, CA. Sister-in-law, Marian Mauer of New Holstein. Many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Oscar; sisters, Lola Snyder, Joan Feuerstein; brothers, Elroy, James, Robert Mauer; sisters-in-law, Jean, Dorothy Mauer, Elsie Bennin, Esther Miller, Isabelle Steiner; brothers-in-law, Robert Snyder, Robert Feuerstein, Lee Steiner Clarence Bennin, Lawrence Miller.
On behalf of Germaine's daughters, we would like to express a special thank you to the wonderful staff at Willowpark Place for their many hours of loving care for our mom. To the Home Health Care/Hospice nurses, words can't express our appreciation for the care and compassion that you brought to our mom during her final year with us.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30am on Friday, August 24, 2018 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 1724 Madison Street, New Holstein, WI. Following the Mass Germaine will be laid to rest next to her husband, Oscar in the Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation: Family & friends may greet the family on Friday, August 24, 2018 at the Sippel Funeral Home, 2618 Altona Avenue, New Holstein, WI from 9:00am until 11:00am.
