Gordon R. "Smokie" Rieder, age 81, of New Holstein passed away Saturday, September 19, 2015, with his family at his side following a battle with cancer since march of this year.
He was born January 29, 1934, in the Town of Marshfield near Mount Calvary to the late Gilbert & Ludwina (Wagner) Rieder.
He attended Holy Cross Grade School in Mount Calvary and graduated from New Holstein High School in 1952.
On October 26, 1963, he married Janice Buechel at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in New Holstein.
Smokie had worked at Tecumseh Engine Products in New Holstein until his retirement in 1994. He was a charter member of New Holstein Lions Club where he also served as president for three terms and served as Deputy District Governor. He was a member of the Community Chest Board of Directors and served on the La Tec Credit Union Board of Directors. Smokie was the chairperson for New Holstein's Sesquicentennial celebration in 1998.
Smokie was a devout Packer fan; he was one of the fortunate fans that attended the famous "Ice Bowl" as well as many other games. In recent years, he attended many of Larry McCarren's Locker Room Shows. He loved to read his newspapers, keeping track of all the latest sporting news and attending his grandchildren's sporting events
He is survived by his wife, Janice of New Holstein; his daughter, Julie (Scott) Ahlswede of Plymouth; his grandchildren, Sarah Hendrickson and her boyfriend, Jesse Seider, Benjamin Ahlswede and Brandon Ahlswede and his fiancée, Sara; his brother, Robert (Jean) Rieder of Chilton; his sisters-in-law, Janet Rieder of New Holstein, Alice Mayer of Stockbridge, Lilas Hertel of Green Bay and Dolores Buechel of New Holstein. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his son, Randy Rieder; his sister, Dolores; his brother, Ronnie Rieder; his father-in-law and mother-in-law; his brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law.
Funeral Services will be held at 6:00pm on Thursday, September 24, 2015, at the Sippel Funeral Home, 2618 Altona Avenue New Holstein, WI 53061.
Family and friends may greet the family at the funeral home on Thursday from 2:00pm until 5:30pm.
