Harvey G. Schmidt, age 94, formerly of Brillion, recently of Venice, FL, passed away after a short illness on March 19, 2016 in Venice, FL.
He was born on December 2, 1921 in Colby, WI, the son of the late Edward Mathias Schmidt and Helen (Stahl) Schmidt. Harvey was raised on dairy farms during his younger years in northeastern Wisconsin. He proudly served in the U.S. Army 30th Signal Battalion during World War II participating in the North African and Italian campaigns. After the war, he returned to dairy farming and married Ruth P. Skarvan on Sept. 11, 1948. He subsequently became a truck driver, moved to Brillion and was employed by the Brillion Iron Works, Inc. for 33 years. He retired in 1989. In 2003, the couple moved to Florida. He was a member of the American Legion Post 126 of Brillion and the post in Florida.
Harvey is survived by his son, James (Wanda Woodrough), of Black Mountain, NC, and daughter, Janice, of Venice, FL., two granddaughters, Ariana and Alexis, and a great-grandson, Vallen. He is also survived by a brother, Robert (Joan), and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Ruth, five sisters, Laverne (Joseph Bangart), Jeanette (Frank Wachowski), Ardyce (Francis Riha), Carol (Norbert Sloma), Patricia (Norbert Novak), and five brothers, Duane (Lorraine Hoffmann), Merle (Charlotte Morris), Truman (Jean Pomeroy), Alfred (Lorraine Burmeister), and Arnold (Mary Cleven).
Funeral Mass will be held at 4:00 p.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Brillion on Tues. March 29th. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Timothy Brandt. Military Rites will be accorded by the Bloedorn, Becker, Jensen American Legion Post 126 of Brillion. Burial will be at a later date in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Brillion.
Friends may call at the church on Tuesday afternoon from 2:00 p.m. until 3:45 p.m.
