Herbert "Herbie" M. Halbach, 84, of New Holstein, died Thursday June 3, 2010 at his home with his family at his side following a courageous 6 ½ year battle with Lymphoma. He was born May 3, 1926 in Marytown to the late Henry & Ottilia Roehrig Halbach. Herbie attended St. Mary's Catholic Grade School in Marytown. He served in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theatre from 1944-1946. On September 20, 1949 he married Romilda "Millie" Nett at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Jericho. He and his wife farmed in the Marytown area. They moved to New Holstein in 1991 and retired from farming in 2001. In addition to farming, in the fall, Herbie helped pelt mink at various neighborhood mink farms. He currently was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in New Holstein and a former member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Marytown. Herbie was also a member of the Marytown Veterans and the New Holstein American Legion Post 124. He was a former member of the Holy Name Society in Marytown, former member of the Marytown Athletic Club and the "We Love to Dance" Club. Herbie enjoyed bowling, John Deere equipment, joy riding in the countryside, sitting on the front porch, playing cards and most importantly spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Millie of New Holstein; his four children, Sandy (Dave) Burg of New Holstein, Carol Ninmer and her fiancé, Dennis Weber of Kiel, Dave (Vicki) Halbach of St. Peter and Lori (Steve) Hess of New Holstein; five grandchildren, Brian (Jess) Burg, Brent Burg, Tiffany Ninmer, Aleesha Halbach and Devin Halbach; 2 great-grandchildren, Madelyn & Ellie Burg; his brother, LaVern (Margaret) Halbach of New Holstein; his in-laws, Willard Seifert of New Holstein, Irene Nett of New Holstein and Cordelia Nett of New Holstein and a special friend, Julitta Bertram of St. Peter. Preceding him in death were his parents; a grandson, Christopher Ninmer; a brother and his wife, Wilbert "Heinie" & Anita Halbach; a sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Seifert; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Philipp & Margaret Nett and his brothers-in-law Oliver (Aurelia) Nett, Ervin (Stella) Nett, Tony Nett and LaVern Nett. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday June 7, 2010 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 1724 Madison Street, New Holstein. Rev. Harold Berryman, Pastor, will officiate. Military Rites conducted by the New Holstein American Legion Post 124 will be held at the church immediately following the Mass. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Family and friends may call at the Sippel Funeral Home 2618 Altona Avenue, New Holstein on Sunday, June 6th from 4-8 PM and again Monday morning from 9-10:30 AM when brief family rites will be held at the funeral home. A prayer service will be held at the funeral home Sunday evening at 7:45 PM. A memorial fund will be established in his name. The best care Herbie received was from his wife, Millie, who was there by Dad's side through thick and thin, better or worse and sickness and health. She fought this battle with Dad. She rejoiced when Dad got good news and fought harder when it wasn't so good. We could not be prouder of her! We know our Dad is eternally grateful.
