Joan T. (Schockmel) Bittner, age 91, formerly of St. Cloud, passed away peacefully on August 10, 2021 at Anna's House Assisted Living in New Franken, WI where she resided for just over a week. She was born May 31, 1930, in the Town of Greenbush, WI; a daughter of Dennis & Kate (Roltgen) Schockmel. Joan graduated from Plymouth High School, Sheboygan County Normal School, and Marian College. She began her forty year teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse in Sheboygan County and then taught grades 3-5 in Greenbush. Over the years, she also taught at Elder Grove and Eden. She retired from teaching in 1992. Joan was always proud to be remembered by her students and referred to as being their favorite teacher. On July 1, 1950, she married Gerald "Jerry" Bittner at Our Lady of Angels Church in Armstrong. He preceded her in death on October 5, 2002. He was the love of her life and they enjoyed 52 wonderful years together. Joan was a loving mother, wife, sister, a very proud grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her children Hughie and Jean were her most precious gifts. However, the grandchildren were a very close second. The great-grandchildren referred to her as "GG" and she was very much involved in their lives. They will miss her beyond words. Joan was a woman of strong faith and a devout Catholic. She recited her rosary daily; praying for family and friends. Joan loved to read, watch all sports, and do crossword puzzles until her eyes failed from macular degeneration. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jean & Mark Verbeten; her two grandchildren, Alex (Laura) Verbeten and Kelsey (Mike) Frey; her great-grandchildren, William & Nora Verbeten and Eliana & Griffin Frey; and her sister, Pat Rieden. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Jerry; her son, Hugh; sisters, Anna Marie Shea and Marge Hau. A Liturgy Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, August 13, 2021, at Shepherd of the Hills Catholic Church, W1562 County Road B, Eden, WI 53019. Rev. Mark Jones, Pastor, will officiate. Joan will be laid to rest next to her husband, Jerry, in Our Lady of Angels Catholic Cemetery in Armstrong. Visitation: Family and friends may visit with Joan's family at the church Friday, August 13th from 11:00 AM until 12:30 PM. The family requests that visitors please wear masks during the visitation hours and masks may be removed for the Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to Unity Hospice. Joan's family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Anna's House and Unity Hospice. Their kindness and love for our mother will always be remembered. Mom will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew her, but precious memories of her will keep her alive in our hearts.
