Obituary

Joseph I. "Joe" Guelig Sr., age 91, of rural St. Cloud, passed away unexpectedly Friday, September 10, 2021, at Harbor Haven Rehabilitation Center in Fond du Lac. He was born January 29, 1930, to Alex F. Sr. & Malania (Ditter) Guelig. He attended Holy Cross Catholic Grade School. On June 10, 1952, he married Mary Kathleen "Katie" Weber at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Marytown; Katie preceded him in death on January 20, 2018. Joe farmed his entire life on the Guelig homestead in the Town of Marshfield and a seasonal worker for local canning companies. He served on the town board for over 20 years and hauled water for the Mt. Calvary Fire Department for many years. Joe looked forward to the sturgeon spearing season. He and his wife were members of various bowling leagues. He enjoyed watching the Milwaukee Brewers and going out to eat. In his later years, he faithfully cared for his wife, Katie, after she was stricken with MS. When he no longer could care for her at their home, he visited her every day, for eight years, at the Villa Loretto until her passing. He was a member of Our Lady of the Holyland Catholic Church-Mt. Calvary. Survivors include his six children, Shirley Guelig of Fond du Lac, JoAnn (Dennis) Diaz of North Fond du Lac, Jim (Rosie) Guelig of rural St. Cloud, Randy Guelig of rural St. Cloud, Kathy Baganz of rural St. Cloud, and Joe (Kay) Guelig of rural St. Cloud; 15 grandchildren, Kim Diaz (friend, Mark Riendeau), Terri (Chris) Kuechler, Jamie (Ryan) Smeester, Kaylene (John) Lisowe, Tracy (Jason) Freund, Jimmy Jr. (Lauren) Guelig, Tiffany Guelig (Fiancé, Eric Weber), Tyler (Heather) Guelig, Travis Guelig, Tristen Guelig, Chelsea Baganz, Isabelle Baganz, Dylan Guelig (friend, Savannah Stock), Alexa Guelig, and Cami Guelig; 18 great-grandchildren, his sisters and brother, Stella Whitby, Theresa Keifenheim, Esther Boehnlein, Elizabeth (Leander) Ebertz, and Alex Jr. (Kathy) Guelig; his sisters-in-law, Mary Alice Guelig and Julie Weber. He is further survived by nieces; nephews; other relatives; and friends. Preceding him in death were his wife, Katie; his parents, Alex Sr. & Malania Guelig; his sister, Helen Hoerth; his brother, Harold Guelig; his brothers-in-law, Wilber Whitby, David Keifenheim, and David Boehnlein; his sister-in-law Lorena (Elmer) Diefenthaler; and two brothers-in-law, Norman Sr. (Julie) Weber and Sylvester Weber. A Liturgy Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, September 14, 2021, at Our Lady of the Holyland Parish-Mt. Calvary Church, 308 S. County Road W, Mt. Calvary, WI 53057. Rev. Randy Knauf, OFM Cap will officiate. Joe will be laid to rest next to his wife, Katie, in the Holy Cross Cemetery. Visitation: Family and friends may visit with Joe's family at the church in Mt. Calvary on Tuesday, September 14th from 2:30 PM until 5:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established, in Joe's name, for the Winnebago East Shore Lions Club. Joe's family would like to thank Fr. Gary Wegner, Fr. Randy Knauf, Sr. Jenada for their visits and words of comfort.
