Kathleen Ann (O'Brien) Hoerth, 84, of New Holstein, died suddenly early Sunday morning, August 8, 2021 after being admitted a day earlier to Ascension Calumet Hospital in Chilton. Born August 24, 1936 in Kewaunee to a large Irish farm family in Curran, WI, she attended Denmark Public Schools, graduating from high school in 1954. She married Marvin Hoerth on April 19, 1958 in Cooperstown, WI. After a brief stay in Green Bay, they moved to New Holstein, where she raised the family and worked part-time at Holy Rosary Parish, while her uncle Rev. Lambert Scanlan served as parish priest. A fatal accident involving her sister, Maureen, led the family to take over the lease of The Pines, a tavern outside Maribel, WI. Kathy's homemade chili was typically served up with the beer, shots, and humor. The family spent five years there before returning to New Holstein. Another challenge would arise with the discovery of brain cancer in her youngest son during the stay in Maribel. Ricky would pass away three years later. During that time, Kathy would go back and forth between the doctors in Green Bay while managing the tavern during the day and working nights at Tecumseh. In spite of life's challenging turns, Kathy always prepped for holidays, especially Christmas and St. Patrick's Day, decorating the barroom at The Pines or the home in New Holstein. She loved to cook and bake, collecting hundreds of church and community cookbooks and magazine recipe clippings. Friends will recall Kathy's ringing laughter during card games and parties. She worked various jobs throughout the years including at VanderPutten's Bakery, Tecumseh Engines, Johnsonville, Kaytee Seed. Co., Calumet Homestead, and Willowdale Nursing Home. She belonged to the Daughters of Isabella at Holy Rosary for many years. Another misfortune came upon her when a stroke took away her eyesight fifteen years ago. Kathy persevered and managed to stay in her New Holstein home until the end. She is survived by three children: Jeff Hoerth of Kirkland, WA, Greg Hoerth of Mesa, AZ, Jennifer (John) Cook of Issaquah, WA, grandchildren Tamara, Max, Eva, and Liam, her sister, Colleen O'Brien, and her brother, Fr. William O'Brien, sisters-in-law Marlene Schneider, Mary Hoerth, Mary Ann O'Brien, brother-in-law Ron Hoerth, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marv; a son, Ricky; her parents, William and Eva O'Brien; brothers Pat O'Brien and Dennis O'Brien; sisters Maureen Rich, Sheila Kemnitz, and Helen O'Brien; parents-in-law William and Loretta Hoerth; brothers-in-law Gene Hoerth, Donald Kemnitz, and Roger Schneider; along with aunts, uncles, a nephew, and cousins. Kathy is being laid to rest at Holy Rosary Cemetery alongside Marv and Ricky. Sippel's Funeral Home in New Holstein has assisted with the arrangements. There will be a post-pandemic prayer service held at the cemetery next year.
