Obituary

Larry Merten of Fond du Lac passed away peacefully with his family at his side on March 3rd at St. Agnes Hospital after a brief illness. He was born August 10, 1935 in Johnsburg to Leo & Marcella (Schmitz) Merten. He was a graduate of Chilton High School and served in the US Army after high school. Larry and Mary Ellen Seurer were married October 13, 1956. Larry and Mary farmed for 40 years and later in life worked part time at the Fond du Lac Clinic. Mary preceded him in death on February 10, 2005. Larry was also preceded in death by Mary Ann Goebel on March 10, 2013, who was his partner of 5 years. Larry was a member of Our Lady of the Holyland Parish-St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Johnsburg, Pipe Senior Center, and a retired member of the Calumet Fire Dept.

Larry enjoyed playing cards, bingo, golf, Saturday night suppers at his home and spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his children Ann Schmitz, Allan (Rosie) Merten, Alice Merten, Audrey Merten, Arlene Mand and Arlyn Merten; his grandchildren Tony Merten, Ashley Mand, Kyle (Jena Schultz) Mand and Hailey (Jared) Drummond and his great-grandchildren Ella, Alex, Cameron & Delaney Merten and Gabrielle Drummond. He is also survived by Mary Ann's family: Jacki Goebel, Kathy (Ken) Andrew, Doug (Janet) Goebel, Sheila (Craig) Lefeber and BJ (Jodie) Goebel. He is also survived by nieces & nephews, other family and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, in-laws Tony & Florence Seurer, wife Mary Ellen Merten, son-in-law Jeff Mand, partner Mary Ann Goebel & her son Mark Goebel. He was also preceded in death by his brothers and sisters-in-laws Ernie (Virginia) Merten, Hazel (Robert) Blanck, Darlene (Willard) Daun & Fr. Mel Hermanns.

A Liturgy Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, March 8, 2023, at Our Lady of the Holyland Parish-St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Johnsburg (N9288 County Road W, Malone, WI 53049). Military Rites, conducted by State Military Honors and the Mt. Calvary American Legion Post 454 will take place following the Mass with burial in the church cemetery to follow.

Visitation: Family and friends may visit with Larry's family at the church in Johnsburg on Wednesday, March 8th from 10:30 AM until 1:30 PM.

In lieu of flowers and other memorial items, a memorial fund will be established in his name.
