Obituary

Mary Jo (Greuel) Spletter, age 92, of New Holstein, passed away Friday, August 25, 2023, at Caring Hands Assisted Living in New Holstein.

She was born March 16, 1931, in Ortonville, MN, to Henry & Alma (Buechel) Greuel. Mary Jo graduated from New Holstein High School in 1949. On December 29, 1954, she married Paul Spletter in Milwaukee. Paul preceded her in death on November 30, 2014.

Mary Jo was known for her insane amount of patience, which was necessary raising 8 children, not holding back her opinion and a knack for telling it like it is. She always told you the truth even if it wasn't what you wanted to hear.

It was the school of hard knocks and yes, we were told many times how she had to walk for miles in a blizzard to get to school, so suck it up. These words of encouragement, wisdom, and sometimes comfort, kept us in line, taught us the "school of hard knocks" and gave us something to pass down to our children. She was a big fan of wooden spoons – whether they were used for her tremendous love of baking or the occasional behavioural correction.

With that said she was genuine, kind, creative, wickedly funny, and loved her people to a fault. She was one of the strongest women we knew, not like she could bench press 200 pounds, but her emotional strength was extraordinary. She handled life's ups and downs with an even stride and was not one to complain - unless you accidentally threw away her favorite scissors - then you'd hear about it every time you saw her.

She will be sorely missed and survived by her eight children, Michael Spletter, Richard Spletter, Stephen (Patricia) Spletter, Deborah (John) Moran, Gregory (Lisa) Spletter, Jenifer (Douglas) Achsel, Douglas (Lluvica) Spletter, and Suzanne (Garrett) Weber; 13 Grandchildren; 22 Great-Grandchildren; her sister, Jean Greuel; her brother, Jim (Sharon) Greuel; nieces; nephews; other relatives; and friends.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband Paul; a Granddaughter; her parents; her sister, Katherine Schlicting; her brother, John Greuel All whom loved her dearly and will never forget her tenacity, wit, charm, grace (when pertinent) and undying love and caring for them.
