Nancy Jo Werner, 60, of New Holstein passed away on Saturday, August 6, 2011 at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Appleton. Nancy was born on December 21, 1950 in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, daughter of John and Doris Lilly. She graduated from Huntingdon High School in 1968 and received her bachelor's degree from Mansfield University in 1972. Nancy attended Lancaster Theological Seminary from 1973-1976 where she received a master's degree in religious education. While attending seminary she met her husband, the Reverend James E. Werner of Elgin, Illinois. They were married in 1979 at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Cincinnati, Ohio. Throughout her life, Nancy held many positions in the education profession. Early in her career she served as the Director of Religious Education at Manheim Lutheran Church as well as Director of Education at Head Start in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Later she served as the Director and Lead Teacher at the Little Red School House nursery school in Rock Falls, Illinois. Nancy also spent many years as a substitute teacher in the New Holstein School District. Nancy was a member of St. John United Church of Christ in New Holstein where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, and served as the president of Women's Fellowship. She was active in the New Holstein Junior Women's Club and was a past board member of the New Holstein Historical Society. Nancy is survived by her husband, the Reverend James E. Werner of New Holstein; her four daughters, Megan Werner of Wausau, Wisconsin, Mary (Jason) Sufka of Ramsey, Minnesota, Melissa Werner of Dekalb, Illinois, and Melanie Werner of New Holstein; two grandsons, Ayden and Austin Sufka; her mother, Doris Stitt of Huntingdon, Pennsylvania; her three brothers Tom (Kim) Lilly of Frederick Maryland, Bob (Deborah) Lilly of Franklin, Tennessee, and Scott Lilly of West Virginia. Nancy is also survived by nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Nancy was preceded in death by her step-father Donald Stitt; her father John Lilly; and her paternal and maternal grandparents. Funeral services for Nancy will be held at 5:00 pm on Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at St. John United Church of Christ 2111 Church Street in New Holstein with the Reverend Philip Meili officiating. Relatives and friends may call at the church on Tuesday from 1:00 pm until the time of the service at 5:00 pm. Memorial funds have been established in her name for St. John United Church of Christ and the American Cancer Society.
