Pearle M. Tingley, 103, passed away Saturday morning, November 27, 2021, at Willow Park Place assisted living in New Holstein, where she had resided for several years. She was born April 10, 1918, in Lockeport, Nova Scotia, Canada, to Joseph and Eula Downie MacKay. Pearle lived an exemplary life of service, especially to her family. She set aside her dream of becoming a professional pianist and left school as a teenager to deliver milk from the family dairy after the untimely deaths of her father and older sister. A few years later, when the farm was sold, Pearle and her mother moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia, where she attended business college and began working to support them both. A lifelong Christian, Pearle met the love of her life, Irvine Tingley, at church, where they both sang in the choir. On July 8, 1942, Pearle and Irvine were married at the Oxford United Church of Canada in Halifax. They welcomed Pearle's mother into their home for the rest of her life until Eula entered a nursing home at an advanced age. The couple later lived in Ontario, Canada, and then Columbus, Ohio, for many years before moving to the New Holstein area. After Irvine's death in 2005, Pearle lived with or close to family in Kiel, New Mexico, Chicago, and Madison, before returning to the New Holstein area in recent years. She worked for many years as an administrative assistant in Canada and later at Ohio State University, where she also became a popular "house mother" at one of the university's residence halls before retiring at age 60. Pearle then worked tirelessly for years as a volunteer at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, where she was "the flower lady," delivering joy to patients and spending time with them. In her later years, Pearle volunteered by playing the piano regularly for residents at various nursing homes in all the communities where she lived. She also loved to make baby quilts for family members and church friends. Her favorite word was "grateful" and she never failed to thank God and everyone who helped her in any way. Survivors include her children, Richard (Kathy Moore) Tingley, of Westerville, Ohio, John (Evelyn Asch) Tingley, of Chicago, Ruth (Tony) Wasmer, of New Holstein; eight grandchildren: Russell (Christina) Tingley, Rachel Tingley, Nathaniel (Lucy McGowan) Tingley, Kelly Wingerter, Joe (Tovah) Wingerter, Tony (Claudia Hernandez) Federer, Daniel (Lauren) Wasmer; and ten great-grandchildren: Grant and Brock Tingley, Pamela Sweet, Nadia, Asher and Miles Wingerter, Isai Hernandez, Natalie and Ian Federer, and Liam Wasmer. Pearle was preceded in death by Irvine, her husband of 63 years, her parents, a sister, Mary, daughter-in-law, Pamela Tingley, and a granddaughter, Laura Slisher Sweet. The family would like to thank the caring staff at Willow Park Place and the nurses and aides of Heartland Hospice who helped make her comfortable in her last days, and to Sheila Lackershire, who helped her be as beautiful on the outside as she was on the inside. At Pearle's request, cremation has taken place. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, December 9, 2021 at the Sippel Funeral Home, 2618 Altona Avenue, New Holstein, WI 53061.
