Obituary

Raymond "Ray" J. Wirth, age 93, of St. Joe, passed away Monday, November 9, 2015, at the Villa Loretto Nursing Home in Mount Calvary. Ray was born August 2, 1922, to Arthur & Amelia (Roehrig) Wirth. He served as a Naval Aviator, stationed on the USS Midway, from July 4, 1944 to May 12, 1947, attaining the rank of Ensign. On May 1, 1954, he married Jeannette Resop. Jeannette preceded him in death on April 25, 1956. On April 1, 1967, he married Lorraine Goebel. Lorraine preceded him in death on October 25, 2011. Ray had farmed in the Town of Marshfield in the St. Joe area until he was 80. He had also worked at Giddings & Lewis in Fond du Lac for 16 years. He was a member of St. Isidore Parish-St. Joseph Church in St. Joe, a member of the Holy Name Society, the Knights of Columbus in Fond du Lac and a member for over 60 years with the St. Cloud American Legion Harvey Blonigen Post 178. He enjoyed playing sheepshead and skat. He cherished his grandchildren and loved animals. Over his life-time, he donated 21 gallons of blood with the local blood drive. Survivors include his daughter, Cynthia Vollmer of Fairfax, VA; his son, Greg Wirth (girlfriend, Jessie) of Green Bay; three grandchildren, Derek (Karina) Vollmer of Fairfax, VA, Gina (Aaron) Bries of Peoria, IL and Dustin (Colleen) Vollmer of South Milwaukee; two great-grandchildren, Dewi & Desmond Vollmer and a third great-grandchild (baby Bries) due to be born in March 2016; brother-in-law, James (Barbara) Resop of Berlin, WI; three sisters-in-law, Catherine Adelmeyer of Fond du Lac, Sr. Josephine Goebel, CSA of St. Michaels, AZ and Rose Marie Backhaus of Kewaskum. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Preceding him in death were his parents, Arthur & Amelia Wirth; his first wife, Jeannette; his second wife, Lorraine; his sister, LaVerne (Delmar) Mengel and his Godson/nephew, Kenneth Mengel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 14, 2015, at St. Isidore Parish-St. Joseph Church in St. Joe (W620 County Road G St. Cloud, WI 53079). Rev. Oliver Bambenek, OFM Cap will officiate. Inurnment will take place at a later date in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Military Honors Rites will be conducted at the church following the mass by the Naval Honor Guard and the St. Cloud American Legion Harvey Blonigen Post 178. Visitation will take place at the Sippel Funeral Home, 1311 Thorp Street St. Cloud, WI 53079, on Saturday morning, November 14th from 9:00 AM until 10:30 AM when brief rites will be held at the funeral home.
