Brother Walter Paul Kasuboski, OFM Cap., died on July 20, 2022 at the age of 75 in Chicago, IL. He was born on January 28, 1947 in Ripon, WI. Br. Wally, or "Padre Pablo" was invested in the Order of Capuchin Franciscans on August 17, 1967 and made perpetual profession on December 16, 1972. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 1, 1974. Soon after Ordination, Br. Wally's life focused on being a missionary. He studied at the Mexican American Catholic Center in San Antonio, TX, spent time at the Crow Reservation in Montana, and served in Washington DC as a Human Rights Monitor. Throughout his life, he would be called from his small town in Wisconsin to accompany people of different cultures as he focused on social change and civil rights for the marginalized. His humble legacy is his work in Chepo, Panama, where he went in 1988. As a missionary and with his dedication to serve the poor, Br. Wally became a connection between engineers, donors, and construction companies and the needs of the poor people in Panama. Through his connections, he created jobs, allowed for local people to become apprentices to learn a trade, built roads, and designed systems to bring potable water to people. All the while, he and his family would encourage people to help, even leading missionary trips to the small town of Wacuco, Panama. Fr. Wally was recognized internationally for his ministry and dedication to the people of Panama. In 1996, he received the Vasco Nunez del Balboa, the highest civilian award in Panama. In 2004, he received the Distinguished American Award for his work as a missionary in Panama. While receiving honorary doctorates and many accolades for his hard work, his focus was always on the people – as an advocate, as an engineer, and as a friar following the light of Christ. In 2022 he returned to the United States after suffering from heart trouble and was taken to the hospital as soon as he returned. He suffered a stroke while in the hospital and passed. Through his life, Br. Wally was a friar who walked in the footsteps of Jesus Christ while bringing different worlds of people together. Whether it was in a classroom or under the canopy of the jungle, working with US donors or guerilla fighters, speaking to political powers or to those without power or water…Br. Wally sought to unify people in the common mission of service to humanity and faith. He is preceded in death by his parents Leonard Kasuboski and Margaret Ann Sina; his brothers Charles, David, George, and Joseph; his sisters Lucille Chappa and Virginia Wrage; and his sister-in-law Arline Kasuboski. He is survived by his brothers Fredrick (and his wife Sally), Peter (and his wife Laurie), and Raymond; his sisters Marie Tollard (and her husband Don), Angeline Chappa, Teresa Miller, and Bernice Wagner; his brothers-in-law Jerry Wrage and Jim Chappa; his sisters-in-law Barbara, MaryAnn, and Joyce; his many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his many Capuchin brothers with whom he lived, prayed, and ministered for almost 55 years. Funeral arrangements will be held at St. Lawrence Seminary Chapel at 301 Church St. in Mt. Calvary, WI on Wednesday, July 27, 2022. Visitation will be from 9:00AM to 9:45, followed by a Memorial Service. The Liturgy for Christian Burial will begin at 10:30. Burial to follow.
