Roger Wordell, 77, of New Holstein, passed away on December 14, 2022, after a lengthy battle with cancer, chronic COPD, and other health issues. He was born July 14, 1945 to Edgar and Linda (Zahn) Wordell on the family farm north of Kiel. He graduated from Kiel High School in 1963 and worked at Tecumseh before being drafted into the US Army where he served from 1965 -1967. He served one year in Vietnam during the war. Upon return he was employed at Walsdorf Roofing in Kiel until starting his own roofing, siding, and insulation company. In 2000 he closed the business and worked at Tecumseh until its closure. On January 25, 1969, he married Carol Pfeifer at Zion Lutheran Church in Glenbeulah. They were blessed with three children, Christine, Deanna, and Todd.
In his younger years, Roger was an avid pool player and bowler and participated in local leagues. He also enjoyed a great game of sheepshead. He sang with the Men of Harmony for several years. He was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Kiel and in his earlier years, served on the council, coached the Youth Softball team, served as an usher and sang in the choir.
On October 18, 2017 he had the honor of being part of Old Glory Mission 43's trip to Washington DC.
He is survived by his wife, Carol and children, Christine (Leslie III) Gannigan – Elkhart Lake; Deanna (David) Backman – Churubusco, IN: and Todd (Angie) Wordell – Woodbury, MN. Seven grandchildren: Ty (Paige) and Cray Backman, Bryce (Lauren), Jaris, and Emily Gannigan; Alexandra and Tyler Wordell. He's also survived by sisters Janice Loppnow, Bonnie Lau, and Connie Wordell, and sister-in-laws, Delores Wordell, Myra Pfeifer, Ginny Pfeifer and brother-in-laws, Alton (Judy) Pfeifer, and David Pfeifer. He's also survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Karl; brothers-in-law Myron(Mike) Loppnow and Howard Lau, Daniel Pfeifer, William Pfeifer, John Pfeifer, and sister-in-law, Lenora Schuette.
Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, December 18, 2022, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 387 Cemetery Road Kiel, WI 53042. Rev. Brett Naumann will preside.
Visitation: Family and friends may visit with Roger's family at Trinity Lutheran Church in Kiel on Sunday, December 18th from 1:00 PM until 2:45 PM.
Memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church in Kiel or the New Holstein Historical Society.
Roger's family is very thankful for the wonderful care Roger received from the VA and Compassus Hospice for the loving care given him the last three months. Roger's family would especially like to thank Dr. Resteck at the VA in Milwaukee, and Tabitha, Christine, Katlin, and Megan from Compassus.
