Obituary

Roland G. Steffes, 90, of St. Cloud, died peacefully Sunday, December 11, 2011 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born July 26, 1921 in the Town of Marshfield in St. Joe. Son of the late John J. Steffes and Amelia (Bittner) Steffes. Roland attended St. Joseph Grade school. On June 17, 1950 he married Sarah Jane "Sally" Beals at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fond du Lac. In 1949, he founded Steffes Builders Inc. which 4 of his sons continue to operate. He was also a sub-rural mail carrier for 39 years. He was a member of St. Isidore Parish: St. Cloud Church, where he formerly sang in the choir. Roland was a very loyal and sincere man. His wife, children and grandchildren meant everything to him. All his life, he loved and enjoyed woodworking and gardening. As his health declined, he began building dollhouses and birdhouses. Roland and Sally enjoyed wintering in Florida. Survivors include his wife, Sally of St. Cloud; 9 children, Diane (Steve) Schneider of Fond du Lac, Marlene (Jeff) Gebhard of Fond du Lac, Jerrold (Jane) Steffes of St. Cloud, Jerome (Jenny) Steffes of Fond du Lac, Janet (Steve) Nowicki of Plymouth, Richard Steffes of Cascade, Susan (Tom) Ake of Neenah, Allen (Patti) Steffes of St. Cloud, Charles (Jodi) Steffes of St. Cloud; 19 grandchildren, Stephanie Schneider, David Schneider, Laura Schneider (friend Eric), Jessica (Scott) Dahlke, Eric Gebhard (friend Linda), Lisa Gebhard, Jerrod (Angie) Steffes, Jackie (Ross) Knauer, Jonathan Steffes (friend Kelcy), Carley Steffes (friend James), Holley Steffes, Emily Nowicki, Elizabeth Ake, Katherine Ake, Natalie Ake, Annie Steffes, Nicole Steffes, Ryan Steffes, Molly Steffes; 3 great-grandchildren Calvin Steffes, Carter Roland Steffes, and Julia Dahlke; 3 brothers Julian (Rosemary) Steffes of St. Cloud, Paul (Martha) Steffes of New Berlin, Ralph (Darlene) Steffes of LaCrosse; A special cousin who was raised with Roland in childhood, Larry (Leonie) Schnur of Naples, Florida; sister Dorlene Kleinfeldt of Elkhart Lake; sisters in-law Shirley Steffes of Fond du Lac, Marjorie Steffes of Kiel; and other relatives and friends. Preceding him in death were his parents John J. Steffes and Amelia (Bittner) Steffes; 2 sisters Angela Burg and Myrtle Hall; 2 brothers Cletus Steffes and David Steffes; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Elmer & Nellie Beals; sisters in-law Marie Hankwitz, Viola Richter, Jeanette Beals and Delores Mae Beals; brothers in-law Orvin Kleinfeldt, John Burg, Francis Hall, Lawrence Hankwitz, Robert Richter, and James Beals; niece Joan Laufenberg; nephew Tom Steffes. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 AM on Thursday, December 15, 2011 at St. Isidore Parish: St. Cloud Church 924 Main Street. Rev. Steven Kropp OFM Cap. and Rev. Wayne Bittner concelebrating. Burial will be in the St. Cloud Catholic cemetery. Family and friends may call at the Sippel Funeral Home, 1311 Thorp Street in St. Cloud on Wednesday from 3:00 PM-8:00 PM and again Thursday morning at the Funeral Home from 9:00 AM-10:30 AM when brief family rites will be held. A Prayer Service at the Funeral Home will be held Wednesday evening at 8:00 PM. A Memorial Fund will be established in his name. The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to ResCare, Agnesian Hospice Hope, Dr. Jeffrey A. Strong and staff, Br. Steven Kropp, for his many visits, as well as other family and friends that called/visited Roland at home.
