Vernon R. Mastey, age 75, of Hilbert, formerly of Brillion, passed away on Monday, March 12, 2018 at ThedaCare Medical Center in Neenah surrounded by his family.
Vern was born on April 15, 1942 in Laney, Wisconsin, son of the late Florian and Agnes (Jankowski) Mastey. He was a graduate of Seymour High School, class of 1960. Vern served our country in the WI National Guard Red Arrow Division, and was called to Fort Lewis, WA in 1961 for the Berlin Crisis. On June 6, 1969, he married Judy Behrend. She preceded him in death on November 10, 2015. The couple lived in Westby until Vern was transferred in 1989 and relocated to the Cenex Station in Reedsville, now Country Visions Co-op, as the propane gas plant manager. In 2002, the couple moved to Sherwood to fulfill a dream of owning a lake home. Vern was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Brillion. He enjoyed antiques and had a passion for old tractors, cars, and trucks. He especially enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family, whether it was watching grandchildren’s sporting events or helping at his sons fireworks business. Vern and Judy would go out for breakfast every morning, and Vern continued this tradition.
Survivors include his children: Shelly (Dave) Martin of Wilton, WI, Matt (Tammy) Mastey of Brillion WI, and Melissa (Matt) Anderson of Marquette, MI. Grandchildren: Luke, Blake, and Alek Martin of Wilton, WI, Gracie and Mya Mastey of Brillion, WI, step-grandchild Cassie Benisch of Edgerton, WI, Matthew and Mara Anderson of Marquette, MI; brothers, sisters, and other in-laws: James (Shirley) Mastey, Daniel (Marge) Mastey, Gerald (Sophie) Mastey, Marilyn (John) Fuhrman, Sharon Davis, Steven (Lynn) Mastey, Patricia Murphy, Barbara Watson, Betty Mastey, Stanley Mastey, and Margene (Paul) VanderHeyden; nieces and nephews, other relatives, many friends, and Judy’s dog Rozie. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Judy, his father-in-law and mother-in-law: Victor and Violeta (Philippe) Behrend, siblings and other-in-laws: Kenneth Mastey, Chester (Karla) Mastey, John Mastey, Jim Davis, Dwayne Murphy and Jim Watson.
Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, March 16, 2018 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Brillion. Officiating at the Mass will be the Rev. Timothy Brandt. Burial will be in Holy Family Catholic Cemetery.
Friends may call at the church on Friday from 1:00 p.m. until 3:30 p.m.
