Virginia “Ginny” E. Laughrin, age 84, of rural Hilbert, passed away Friday, January 9, 2026.
Ginny was born on March 2, 1941 in New Holstein, daughter of the late John & Frances (DeBuhr) Markwardt. She was a graduate of New Holstein High School, class of 1959. She went on to further education and receive her degree in teaching from the University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh. Ginny met Patrick Laughrin at the Red Wood Bar. The two were married on August 18, 1962 in Calumet County. She taught for a few years before the couple had children. She then stayed home with them, drove school bus for over 25 years, and was very active with the kids. Ginny was also an accomplished seamstress, creating her daughter Betty’s wedding dress. In their younger years, she and Pat would ride their bikes all over, one time going all the way to Door County on a bike trip. Ginny was great at baking and cooking. She also created a huge garden each year for her family. Ginny also volunteered and worked with the Hilbert Recreation Program and the Meals on Wheels Hilbert Site for many years. Later in life, she and Pat would play cribbage every night for $1. She truly was a kind person with a great sense of humor and loved spending time with her family.
Virginia is survived by her husband of 63 years, Patrick of Hilbert; one son and two daughters-in-law: Tom (Jean) Laughrin of Hilbert and the late Michael A. (Sue) Laughrin of Lincoln, NE; one daughter and son-in-law: Betty (Tracy) Bergquist of Marshall, WI; grandchildren: Michaela (Gabe) Williamson, David (Kayla) Laughrin, Ryan Laughrin, Amanda (Kole) Landwehr, Jon (fiancee’ Kayleigh) Bergquist, Andy Bergquist; 6 great-grandchildren with one more on the way; one sister: Carolyn Hogden; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
She was preceded in death by one son: Michael A.; one daughter: Cynthia F.; and siblings and in-laws.
