Obituary

Walter A. Mand, 89, of Marytown passed away on Sunday, September 29, 2013 at the Homestead Care Center in New Holstein. He was born May 27, 1924 in Taycheedah Township, WI to Peter and Eleanora "Ella" (Sabel) Mand. On September 24, 1947, he married Janet Schmitz at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Marytown. Wally was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Marytown, the Marytown Athletic Club, Knights of Columbus, and the Catholic Knights. Wally worked at the Soo Line Railroad in the repair shops as a welder for 40 years retiring in May 1986. In addition Wally owned and operated Mand's Welding Shop in New Holstein for over 30 years. His pride and joy was his garden. He was a well-known vendor at the Fond du Lac Farmers Market—asparagus and sauerkraut were his specialties. Survivors include a son, Gene (Kathy) Mand of Mishicot, daughter, Arlene (Dale) Birschbach of St Peter, two grandsons, Matthew Birschbach of North Fond du Lac and Brandan Birschbach of Appleton. One brother, Frank (Susan) Mand of Zionsville, IN, his in-laws: Germaine Mand of Mt. Calvary, Marjorie Schneider of Fond du Lac, Jerry Blonigen of St Cloud, Christina Schmitz of Fond du Lac, and Alma Schmitz of Mt Calvary, special grandniece, Shannon Kienbaum, who Wally called his "guardian angel". Preceding him in death was his wife Janet in 1995, his parents; his siblings: Gilbert Mand, Joseph (Alvina) Mand, Albert (Florence) Mand, Clarence (Gertrude) Mand, Helen (Reno) Wagner, Lydia (Alois) Mand, Agnes (Ambrose) Mand, his in-laws: Iris Mand, Ruth (Sylvester) Schmitz, Dorthy (Melvin) Freund, Dolores Blonigen, Milton Dilling, Melvin Schmitz, John Schmitz, Ray Schmitz, and Claude Schneider. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 AM on Wednesday, October 2, 2013, at St. Mary's Catholic Church N10232 County Road G New Holstein, WI "Marytown". Rev. Joseph Coerber will officiate. Entombment will be at the Shrine of Rest Chapel Mausoleum at Ledgeview Memorial Park Cemetery in Fond du Lac. Family and friends may call at the Sippel Funeral Home 2618 Altona Avenue New Holstein, WI 53061 on Tuesday, October 1st from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM and again at the funeral home Wednesday morning from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM when brief rites will be held. A prayer service will be held at the funeral home Tuesday evening at 7:45 PM. Memorials in Walter's name may be directed for the American Cancer Society.
