Walter R. Petrie, age 96, of Calvary Station, passed away peacefully Friday, October 27, 2017, at Villa Loretto Nursing Home with his loving family at his side.
He was born May 8, 1921, in the Town of Marshfield to Urban & Mary (Schmitz) Petrie. He attended Calvary Station Public School prior to attending Holy Cross Catholic School through eighth grade. His high school years were spent at St. Lawrence Seminary where he also completed one year of college.
On August 8, 1951, he married Catherine Goebel at St. Michael Catholic Church in Dotyville. Following his schooling, he helped on the farm and worked at Kohler Co. until farming became his full time occupation.
Walter & Catherine farmed in the Town of Marshfield near Calvary Station. After retiring from the farm, Walter worked as a courier for National Exchange Bank.
Walter was a member of St. Isidore Parish-Holy Cross Church in Mount Calvary, served as an usher for many years and held various positions on the parish council. He bowled for many years at the bowling alley in Mount Calvary. He was a zoning board member for the Town of Marshfield for numerous years. He enjoyed attending and watching his children's and grandchildren's sporting events as well as watching the Brewers and Packers.
Survivors include his wife, Catherine; his five children, Ann (Jim) Nelson of Fond du Lac, Betty (Larry) Haack of Cross Plains, WI, Mary (Al) Meyer of Fond du Lac, Joan (Greg) Nisler of New Holstein, and John (Beth) Petrie of Calvary Station; his grandchildren, Kevin (Lori) Haack, Brad (Janet) Haack, Jenny (Kurt) Wenger, Katie (Ken) Waddell; Megan Meyer, Jake Meyer; Adam (Jenny) Nisler, Benjamin Nisler, Sarah (Dan) Schaefer, Samuel Nisler, and Joshua Nisler; Kollin (Catherine) Petrie, Josie (Dustin) Birschbach, and Mitchell Petrie; a step-grandchild, Ryan (Jenny) Meyer; his great-grandchildren, Leighton Haack, Chloe & Colton Haack, Katelyn Wenger; Kaden, Logan, Emmett Nisler, Roman Schaefer; Rosemary Petrie, Lily Birschbach; step-great-grandchildren, Cassie (Anthony) Chiarello, Cody McMillan; Sean & Olivia Meyer; two sisters, Patricia (Donald) Giebel and Sister Marie Rose Petrie; sister-in-law, Mary Wirth; brothers-in-law, Ray DeBoth, Leo (Frieda) Goebel and Bill (Sue) Kleinmann. He is further survived by numerous nieces; nephews; other relatives, and friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Urban & Mary Petrie; his brother, Fr. Fulgence Petrie; his sisters, Loretta DeBoth, Florence, and Rose Mary Petrie; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Leo Sr. & Luvina Goebel; a brother-in-law, Lloyd Wirth; and a sister-in-law, Luvina Kleinmann.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, November 2, 2017, at St. Isidore Parish-Holy Cross Church, 308 S. County Road W, Mount Calvary, WI 53057. Rev. Gary Wegner, OFM Cap will officiate. Walter will be laid to rest in the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery following the Mass.
Visitation: Family and friends may greet the family at the Sippel Funeral Home, 1311 Thorp Street, St. Cloud, WI 53079, on Wednesday, November 1st from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Visitation will also be at the funeral home Thursday, Nov 2nd from 11:30 AM until 12:20 PM.
A prayer service will be held at the funeral home Wednesday evening at 8:00 PM.
