Walton G. Frisch, 81, of N1180 County Road J, New Holstein, died August 5, 2010, at Sheboygan Memorial Hospital, after a year-long struggle with pulmonary fibrosis. Walt was born April 18, 1929, in New Holstein. He graduated from New Holstein High School with the Class of 1947, and from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in 1952. On June 15, 1951, at St. John U.C.C. in New Holstein, he married Mary Catherine Hipke, daughter of Gilbert and Bird Hipke. Three children, Douglas (Katherine), Julie (Mark) Schoenborn, and David (Dilara) were born to the union. Walt taught agriculture in Princeton, Wisconsin, until he was called into service in the Army during the Korean War. He was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington, where he served with the Veterinary Corps until 1955. Upon return from his tour of duty, he joined A.T. Hipke and Sons Canning Co. as a field crops supervisor; he was part of the corporation until it dissolved in 1977. During his time with A.T. Hipke and Sons, he purchased several farms, where he and his family spent many busy and memorable hours growing cash crops and strawberries. Walt was a 58-year member of the Calumet Lodge F. & A.M., 51-year member of the Order of Eastern the Star, the Beja Shrine Club, 57-year member of the New Holstein American Legion Post 124, a member of the National Canners Association Old Guard, a charter member of Friends of Ledgeview and member of its successful endowment committee. Walt was a life-long member of St. John U.C.C. Early years of boating on Lake Winnebago and fishing Lake Michigan from his Slickcraft "Mity Nice", snowmobiling, Canadian fishing trips, and time at friends' "Up North" cottages filled his leisure days. Walt enjoyed frequent friendly games of cards and lunch with the guys. An adventure around the world in 1981 triggered a life-long interest in travel. Walt's interest in nature photography became an obsession as he graduated from film to digital cameras. In later years watching the ticker tape on CNBC and the companionship of his Bernese mountain dog, Gibson, helped occupy his time. Survivors in addition to his wife and children include five grandchildren: Katie and Amy Schoenborn, Kayce and Matthew Frisch, and Courtney Frisch; and sister-in-law Edith Frisch. Preceding him in death were his parents August W. and Elda Frisch, brother August J., and sisters-in-law Shirley Custer and Barbara Driskill. Compassionate, considerate, thoughtful, loving—there are not sufficient words to describe the professional caregivers on 3K at Sheboygan Memorial Hospital. Walt and his family alike received support and services from the staff. The VNA was most helpful during his hospice care. In the difficult role as deliverer of the original diagnosis to frequent office and then daily hospital visits, Walt's pulmonologist, Dr. Steven Kream, proved he is a gifted physician and warm human being. During his hospitalization Walt would praise "his people" on the hospital staff, and his grateful family will never forget. A Memorial Service will be held at 6:30 PM on Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at St. John United Church of Christ 2111 Church Street in New Holstein. Rev. James E. Werner will officiate. Military Rites conducted by the New Holstein American Legion Post 124 will follow at the church. A Masonic Service will be held at 2:30 PM Tuesday at the church. Visitation will be held at the church from 3:00 PM until the time of the Memorial Service.
